funny someone should mention kirk covington......i wanted to buy some tribal tech but didnt know of the drummer........wots he like?

He's built like an NFL lineman, huge guy. Saw them in Detroit and I dug his playing a lot but sometimes on record he sounds a bit "thin",like on the Holdsworth CD. I don't like the 12" splash, maybe a ten, too much anyway.

Wow......this is the first time I've ever seen/heard Keith, and I have to say that even if you don't like him, you HAVE to admit there's certainly something unique there. He has a hell of a feel, and certainly shows it. I'm very interested to hear more!

Kirk Covington is a killer. His drumming is unorthodox but I have seen him four times live in Amsterdam with Tribal Tech and he is getting better and better. Madness with groove and yes he is ugly [img]eek.gif[/img] but he drives the band and that's what he's been asked for. Check him out!!! All Scott Henderson cd's are great anyway and Joey Heredia kicks major but Kirk too. What I like about Tribal Tech is that it is a band. Not a blues band or a fusion band but just a band playing a lot of styles with good tunes some night better then the other. We are talking about music here. Once again check him out!!!

What I found interesting was that he tilts his snare inwards, ala Buddy, Freddie, and Steve Smith, but his traditional grip left hand holds the stick WAY back at the end. Seems like that kinda defeats the whole Gruber/Buddy concept of letting the stick to the work.......

Yeah, he was painful to look at, but I'll tell ya what, the grooves on GodWhacker, GreenBook, and Lunch with Gina from SD's Everything Must Go speak for themselves.......

Best of luck to the lad. It was cool seeing Will Lee playing barefoot(?). He's a monster. Kinda makes you wonder how challenged he really is with the Letterman gig, other than the sight reading. (Lotsa steady money though, eh?)

I was watching closer and he has got some SLICK hip drum shit goin on with his left hand...solid drummer.

Kirk is a great player IMHO.
He is unconventional, but it works.
He is also a very nice and funny guy.
Good ole Texas boy.

He can play the keyboards and sing with the best of them as well.

Keith IS a very original player.
I think I need to see him play (other than the video) to get a better grasp on what he is trying to do.

Kirk is a great player... sometimes he sounds a bit forceful & manic on all that live boot TT stuff, but what the hay! Controlled manic-hysteria! Gotta luv it. Met him in Clearwater, FL on a TT gig a coupla yrs back... he was indeed a nice chap... & he IS built like an NFL lineman... & yes he IS an exceptionally good bluesy, soulful singer & pianist! He should have his own blues/r&b contract thing happenin' like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Chris Duarte, Jeff Healey, & whatnot...
Kirk, Brian Blade [another excellent drummer, altho different & unique], & Carlock [from what i've heard] are often painful to watch play the instrument... somewhat physically unorthodox-looking playing styles... but the sounds they make more than compensate....
